This work is, for me, seminal. Seminal in the sense that it is one great, big metaphor.
I very much enjoy the idea of blurring the sacred with the secular; throughout Missa brevis, there are many instances of my attempts at this. Make no mistake: I have a profound respect for all religions. But I think we have reached a defining moment in time in that as a society we are neither religious nor nihilistic (corporatism, the rapid development of technology and the saturation of media all prevent the former). Rather, we are ourselves, as we always have been – but perhaps now with a little more self-awareness. God is God, Lucifer is Lucifer, the atheist is the atheist, and we stand somewhere in the middle. Do you lean towards any particular camp? Perhaps you see no distinction. In any case, at least we are all grounded by that constancy we call music.
